Priorities

Oh internets, it has been so long. And unlike the usual reasons I take a break from this blog (I had to read a ton of Avengers fic/there was this awesome nail polish tutorial I had to try six or seven times/I didn't feel like blogging) this one was actually important!

I was applying for a writer-in-residence position in a place I don't want to name because I am superstitious sometimes.

I have never ever done something like this before, and the process made me extremely nervous. Fortunately, I had excellent support from my publishers, my friends, and Catriona the Arts Advisor at Creative New Zealand - be it known, NZ literary internets, she is totally excellent and was way cool about me calling her three (!!!) times and oversharing my nerves while I tried to tackle the whole application process.

And also I had plenty of time to put it together! It wasn't due until March 9th, so I figured I could take one five day writing work week (I do Retail Job the other two days) and slam the whole thing together in a steady flow of productivity, plus another couple of days to write the sample chapter of the project I was proposing.

ME: This is a perfect plan!
RETAIL JOB: We've scheduled you for an extra five days during this pay period.
Me: Oh, perfection, how you continue to elude me.

So I worked* those shifts and did most of the application, including the sample chapter, in my two free days. Then I got up at 6.30 this morning, which is not a time I usually see from that side of the bed, finished the application, and at 3pm, sent it a WHOLE DAY before I absolutely had to.

Then I ate a sandwich and took a "nap" that lasted five hours.

I did almost nothing else this week. I didn't answer email or do much with my tumblr queue or tweet as often as normal and I certainly didn't blog. Which I think is a shame, because I have an awful lot to say. Some of it is about boobs!

But I'm not going to say it now, because I'm still operating on a sleep deficit. Catch you tomorrow, internets!

*I know other people are perfectly capable of doing a full retail day and then cheerfully hitting their writing quota. I used to be able to do this too, and I co-wrote and wrote several books the last time I had a 9-5 job teaching in Japan. But uh frankly I did a lot of that writing in the staffroom between classes.

Nowadays, unless it's a short shift (of six hours), I come home from Retail Job and my brain is total mush from being social and friendly with people while on my feet for hours, and I can't even watch TV or read books that are new to me. I think the anxiety disorder plays a part in this, but I'm functional otherwise, so hurrah.
